Joint Satisfaction of Syntactic and Pragmatic Constraints Improves Incremental Spoken Language Understanding
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a model of semantic processing of spoken language that (a) is robust against ill-formed input, such as can be expected from automatic speech recognisers, (b) respects both syntactic and pragmatic constraints in the computation of most likely interpretations, (c) uses a principled, expressive semantic representation formalism (RMRS) with a well-defined model theory, and (d) works continuously (producing meaning representations on a wordby-word basis, rather than only for full utterances) and incrementally (computing only the additional contribution by the new word, rather than re-computing for the whole utterance-so-far). We show that the joint satisfaction of syntactic and pragmatic constraints improves the performance of the NLU component (around 10% absolute, over a syntax-only baseline).

متن کاملA Study on Morpho-Syntactic Patterns: A Cohesive Device in Some Persian Live Sport Radio and TV Talks
Morpho-syntactic patterns device encompasses a subcategory of the cohesive devices that assists hearers to have an adequate mental representation for understanding speech. This article investigates the morpho-syntactic patterns employed in some Persian live sport radio and TV programs adapting Dooley and Levinsohn’s theoretical and analytical framework. The research data includes around 30,000 ...
متن کاملPragmatic expressions in cross-linguistic perspective
This paper focuses on some pragmatic expressions that are characteristic of informal spoken English, their possible equivalents in some other languages, and their use by EFL learners from different backgrounds. These expressions, called general extenders (e.g. and stuff, or something), are shown to be different from discourse markers and to exhibit variation in form, funct...

متن کاملCategorial grammars used to partial parsing of spoken language
Spoken language understanding is a challenge for the development of Spoken Dialogue Systems. Recognition errors and speech repairs make it impossible to get complete syntactic analysis. Shallow parsing and chunking seem to be efficient in order to start both a robust and precise analysis. This paper describes experiments made with Logus, a spoken understanding system based on incremental methol...
